| | Death toll from Peru mudslides rises to 28 Zoom: Aryanews- The death toll from mudslides that struck two Andean villages in northeastern Peru rose to 28 Saturday as search teams continued to look for missing villagers, authorities said. In the worst-hit village of Ambo, police, soldiers and firefighters recovered three more bodies and were trying to account for as many as 50 other people who were missing in the avalanche late Thursday, civil defense officials said. The grim finds pushed the death toll in Ambo to 23. Another five people were killed in a second mudslide Thursday in the village of Cancejos, also in Huanuco province, 410 kilometers (246 miles) northeast of Lima. Civil defense officials said the mudslides were triggered by heavy rains earlier in the week that caused a water reservoir on a hill above Ambo to overflow and another hillside to partially give way over Cancejos.
