There have been reports of 12 confirmed cases of consumers in Florida and Georgia experiencing illness between May 11 and June 5 linked with E. coli O145:H28 infections, including four hospitalizations; no deaths have been reported.
According to the FDA, E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) that can cause illness with symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and vomiting. Symptoms can begin anywhere from a few days after consuming the contaminated food to up to nine days later.
While most healthy individuals recover within a week, some infections may result in a serious complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Consult your health care provider immediately if you ate the frozen blueberries and are experiencing any symptoms that resemble an E. coli infection.
If you purchased the frozen blueberries with the affected lot code and best-by date, do not consume them. The product should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
