NAGOYA – Sekiwake Aonishiki won the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday, claiming the championship title after prevailing in a three-way playoff on the final day.
Sekiwake Aonishiki receives the Emperor’s Cup from Japan Sumo Association Chairman Hakkaku after winning the title at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday. Aonishiki needed to win out in a three-way playoff with sekiwake Atamifuji and ozeki Kirishima after losing his final regulation bout of the tournament to Atamifuji. The title comes as a welcome bonus for Aonishiki, who secured a return to the ozeki rank by finishing with a 12-3 record, enough to surpass the 10 wins he needed.
