Arya News - Natural gas reserves in underground storage facilities in Germany, the Netherlands and Croatia have reached record lows for this time of year, while in four other countries gas storage levels are at their lowest since 2017-2018, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) data reviewed by Sputnik on Wednesday.
As of the end of August 16 gas day (ended on the morning of August 17), gas storage facilities in Germany were 49.91% full, while the Netherlands" facilities were 41.81% full. These are the lowest levels since records began in 2011. In Croatia, reserves stood at 64.28%, which is also a record low for the country since it joined the EU in July 2013. In France, gas storage levels decreased to 63.67%, the lowest since 2017. In Belgium, Latvia and Slovakia, less than 50% of gas has been injected, a record low since 2018. In eight EU countries – Spain, Sweden, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Romania, Austria and Italy – storage levels are at their lowest since 2021-2022. Only three countries show more positive dynamics, with current storage levels higher than in 2025. In Denmark, gas storage facilities are 70.37% full compared to 37.38% last year, in Hungary – 65.11% compared to 64.98%, in Poland – 88.82% compared to 83.11%. Europe is injecting gas into storage facilities in order to prepare for the heating season. According to the European Commission, gas storage facilities play a key role in ensuring gas supply reliability in Europe, allowing to cover up to one-third of the regional demand in winter. However, as of August 16, the overall fullness of gas storage facilities is at a historic low of 61.11%. Amid the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz and concerns about disruptions to fuel supplies, the EU decided to lower the required level of gas storage in member states by the beginning of the winter season from 90% to 80%, European Commission representative Anna-Kaisa Itkonen told RIA Novosti in June. However, Russian gas giant Gazprom had previously forecast that gas storage levels would be below 75% by October 1 if injections continued at the current pace.
