NEW DELHI – North Korea has slammed the United States over its arms sales and military support for Taiwan and accused the country of fueling tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
Washington’s policy on Taiwan undermines peace and stability in the region, state media KCNA’s commentary citing North Korean international affairs analyst Kim Myong Chol said.
Further, it strongly criticised the appearance of US-sold fighter aircraft in Taiwan and said that the United States “should think twice whether it is ready to stand in frontal confrontation with the powerful national power of the People’s Republic of China for the security of Taiwan and whether it can cope with its consequences.”
This comes after the first two of a batch of 66 new F-16V Block 70 fighter jets – ordered in 2019 – arrived in Taiwan last week, as it continues to face a major military threat from Beijing.
Notably, China claims that the democratically governed island is its own territory.
Also, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has pledged full support to Russia and its war effort in a birthday message to President Vladimir Putin.
Kim noted that North Korea continues to expand joint work under their comprehensive strategic partnership. Without mentioning Ukraine, he added that Moscow’s “sacred war of justice” to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity would end in victory, according to KCNA.
North Korea is believed to have sent an estimated 14,000 to 15,000 troops to support Russia’s war in Ukraine since 2024, as per the Ukrainian and South Korean estimates.
