( NewsNation ) — The U.S. began mediating another round of talks Wednesday between officials from Russia and Ukraine with hopes of finally ending the nearly four-year-long war.
The trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi are expected to resume Thursday, with Ukrainian and American officials describing the conversations so far as being productive and moving the ball forward. The negotiations come a day after the Kremlin broke its commitment to the White House to temporarily stop airstrikes amid frigid winter conditions in Ukraine. At least six people were killed in Tuesday’s strikes.

When asked about the strikes, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump was not surprised.
“His reaction was, unfortunately, unsurprised. These are two countries who have been engaged in a very brutal war,” Leavitt said. “Special envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner and President Trump made the impossible possible with respect to peace in the Middle East, and I know they’re looking to do the same with respect to the Russia-Ukraine war as well.”

During his evening address Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a prisoner of war exchange is expected soon.
“We expect an exchange of prisoners of war in the near future,” Zelenskyy said. “We need to return the prisoners home.”
He added Ukraine’s position is very clear: “The war must be ended realistically.”
“It is Russia that must be ready for this. And the partners must also be ready to ensure this realistically with their real guarantees — security guarantees, with their real pressure on the aggressor,” Zelenskyy said. “There should be no rewards for the aggressor. If there are any rewards for the aggressor, Russia will eventually break any agreement.”
