BANGKOK – Thailand’s accelerated deportation procedures and protests over foreign visitors’ behaviour have attracted international media attention, with France’s Le Monde and Israel’s i24NEWS examining enforcement measures and tensions in tourist destinations.
The coverage addresses complaints involving Israeli visitors and business interests, alongside Thailand’s wider response to misconduct by foreign nationals. Phuket and Koh Samui have become focal points of the debate.
Le Monde examined the deportation framework that took effect on August 28, 2026, while also raising concerns about xenophobic rhetoric accompanying the crackdown.
Its September 2 article described procedures allowing cases involving fines or suspended sentences to be referred promptly for deportation consideration.
Separately, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed an order to deport Israeli national Yaacov Ohayon after Koh Samui Provincial Court convicted him of intimidation through threatening messages.
Samui dispute brings deportation powers into focus
The case concerns threats against the owner of Samui Exotic Park. The wider dispute involved allegations about unpaid admission fees, harm to animals and the display of political signs. Those allegations are separate from the conviction for threatening behaviour.
The deportation order does not establish that Ohayon has already been removed from Thailand. He has seven days from notification to appeal.
The new framework provides an administrative process for considering the removal of foreigners whose conduct threatens public order, good morals or public welfare.
Cases can be referred for consideration even where a court imposes a fine or suspends a prison sentence. Misconduct discussed in the coverage includes minor assault, noise disturbances, indecency and property damage.
Unlawful work, business operations using nominee arrangements and forged official documents also fall within the enforcement framework. Referral for consideration does not mean that visa revocation or deportation follows automatically in every case.
Phuket protesters demand shorter stays
i24NEWS reported that about 150 people gathered at Patong Beach in Phuket to demand stricter enforcement against foreign visitors, particularly Israelis.
Protesters called for permitted stays for Israeli tourists to be reduced from 30 days to 15. This was a demand made by demonstrators, rather than an announced government decision.
The broadcaster described criminal investigations and widely circulated incidents as damaging relations between some residents and Israeli visitors. It also expressed hope that the actions of a minority would not dominate perceptions of tourists more broadly.
Complaints involving visitors of several nationalities have affected destinations including Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui.
Despite the tensions, i24NEWS reported that the Tourism Authority of Thailand expected more than 442,000 arrivals from Israel in 2026, which would be a record annual total.
