VIENTIANE – Laos has been ranked second among ASEAN countries for ecotourism and 22nd globally, highlighting the country’s stunning landscapes and potential for sustainable tourism.
According to the latest ranking by US News & World Report, Cambodia ranked highest among ASEAN countries and 17th globally, followed by Laos in second place and 22nd worldwide.
Thailand ranked third in ASEAN and 33rd globally, while Malaysia came fourth in the region and 42nd worldwide. The Philippines ranked fifth in ASEAN and 60th globally.
The ranking highlights the diverse natural landscapes of Southeast Asia and the region’s growing potential for sustainable tourism.
For Laos, the ranking reflects the richness of its forests, rivers and unspoiled natural beauty, which are the main attraction for many visitors.
The recognition also highlights the importance of the Mekong region as an area rich in biodiversity and scenic splendour that appeals to people wanting who enoy the beauties of nature.
The ranking encourages Laos and other ASEAN countries to continue developing sustainable tourism, protecting their natural resources and creating economic opportunities for local communities.
Laos has frequently received international recognition for its tourism potential. In 2025, Lonely Planet placed Laos among the world’s Top 5 countries to visit in its annual “Best in Travel” awards.
In addition, Luang Prabang received global recognition for its sustainable tourism model after winning a Green Destinations Top 100 Story Award in 2025.
