The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) suspended the flag football state championship tournament after a deadly crash killed two individuals at the Stryker Sports Complex, the organization announced Saturday.
The decision was made following a deadly crash on another field at the complex. Two people were killed and 11 others were injured after a woman drove a truck through a soccer field while a youth game was going on, per the Associated Press. A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed Wichita Police confirmed.
Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said police responded to the situation after receiving multiple reports that a vehicle drove through a youth game. When police arrived, they saw "community members and citizens rendering medical aid" to injured individuals.
Police also saw a truck on the field, which contained the driver and two juveniles. Moses confirmed the driver of the truck was a 34-year-old woman who has been cooperative with the investigation. Moses said the two individuals killed were not related. The 11 others hurt were transported to a local hospital. Those injured ranged from five to 68 years old.
Moses said police were still gathering information on the incident. He asked for individuals at the complex to send in video and images , even if they were not taken at the time of the crash.
The crash occurred on a field adjacent to the flag football tournament, per the KSHSAA statement.
The KSHSAA extends our condolences to the families and teams impacted by the incident on a field adjacent to the flag football competition at Stryker Sports Complex Saturday. Given the nature of the emergency, we felt it was best to suspend the flag football third place and championship games until a later date. Details will be announced Monday.
The organization said it would provide additional details regarding the flag football tournament Monday.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly each released statements sending their condolences to "all those impacted" by the event.
