YANGON – The high-quality GW-11 variety of Myanmar rice fetched the highest price because of strong demand from the Philippines.
Myanmar exports rice annually, and the highest prices are being achieved for its high-quality GW-11 rice, which was first exported to the Philippines this year, according to the Myanmar Rice Federation.
Like Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand also export rice to the Philippines. Most orders from Myanmar are for GW-11 rice because of the variety’s high quality, not the country’s rice-milling technology. As a result, the rice is being purchased at a good price.
“The Philippines is buying GW-11 rice for export and has already shipped more than 800,000 tons in four months. Among the countries exporting rice to the Philippines, Myanmar is receiving the highest price—its highest price ever. The Philippines is buying the rice because it prefers the GW-11 variety due to its quality. Since the Philippines is buying more, we need to plant GW-11 rice in the Ayeyarwady Region and other regions to maintain the quality of the variety. Although the Philippines also buys GW-11 rice from Vietnam, Myanmar is proud that it is selling more rice to the Philippines and receiving a higher price than Thailand,” said U Sai Kyaw, a member of the management committee of the Myanmar Rice Federation.
Thailand is reportedly receiving US$480 per ton for GW-11 rice exported to the Philippines, while Myanmar is receiving US$580 per ton.
Myanmar exported more than 800,000 tons of rice from April to August. Belgium was the largest destination for Myanmar’s broken-rice exports, while the Philippines—which is preparing to purchase five million tons of rice—continues to import GW-11 rice.
When GW-11 rice from the Ayeyarwady Region was first exported to the Philippines, it was sold at a reasonable price. However, strong demand in recent months has enabled GW-11 rice from the Mandalay Region to be sold at a good price. Myanmar exported GW-11 rice to China in 2024 and began exporting it to the Philippines in 2026. Orders have increased because of the variety’s popularity.
