China to hike visa fees for Japanese nationals sevenfold, ‘based on reciprocity’

China to hike visa fees for Japanese nationals sevenfold, ‘based on reciprocity’
Arya News - The hike is seen as a countermeasure to the Japanese government’s move in July to raise visa fees for foreign visitors entering the country.

BEIJING – China is raising the visa fee for Japanese nationals traveling to China, starting Monday, a “response based on the principle of reciprocity,” the Chinese Embassy in Japan announced on Friday.
The hike is seen as a countermeasure to the Japanese government’s move in July to raise visa fees for foreign visitors entering the country.
For a single-entry visa to China, the fee will rise from ¥2,250 to ¥16,750, more than seven times the current figure.
Currently, Japanese nationals visiting China for tourism or business are exempt from visa requirements, so the short-term impact is expected to be limited. However, if the exemption measure, which is set to expire on Dec. 31, is not extended, there will be some impact on Japanese nationals entering China.
In July, Japan raised the single-entry visa fee for foreign citizens needing visas to enter Japan fivefold from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000.
According to 2025 visa issuance statistics, Chinese nationals accounted for 73% of the total number of visas issued by Japan.
