HONG KONG – Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced on Thursday that he had accepted the resignation of Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin after she had taken political responsibility for the deadly Tai Po blaze last year.
Effective immediately, Ho’s duties will be assumed by Michael Wong Wai-lun, the deputy financial secretary, who will concurrently serve as the acting secretary for housing.
Speaking at a press conference, Lee said he has submitted a request for the central government to remove Ho from her post.
Lee noted that although Ho was not directly involved in the incident, she has still taken political responsibility for it. He stressed that a politically appointed team must bear political accountability. Taking into account the official’s role in the incident and the heavy workload that lies ahead, he said he had decided to accept Ho’s resignation.
Lee expressed his sorrow for the blaze, and together with seven principal officials bowed in apology at the conference.
