Arya News Agency -TEHRAN – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to India later this week to participate in the BRICS heads-of-state summit, a visit the Foreign Ministry has described as critically important for advancing Tehran's multilateral engagement strategy .
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed on Monday that the trip would take place on either Friday or Saturday, emphasizing the growing significance of multilateral frameworks—particularly BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)—for the Islamic Republic .
"The expansion of activities by both groupings in recent years across various economic and commercial sectors represents a valuable opportunity," Baghaei stated during his weekly press briefing. "We must leverage these platforms both for bilateral consultations with member states and for articulating the Islamic Republic of Iran's positions" .
The president's participation in the BRICS gathering comes as Iran seeks to deepen its integration into non-Western economic blocs, a strategic priority that has gained momentum amid ongoing tensions with the United States over sanctions and military activity in the Persian Gulf region. Tehran formally joined BRICS in January 2024, viewing the group—which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside new members—as a counterweight to Western-dominated financial institutions.
Baghaee's remarks did not specify whether President Pezeshkian would hold bilateral meetings with other leaders on the sidelines of the summit, though he underscored the utility of such gatherings for diplomatic engagement with both BRICS and SCO member states .
The trip marks Pezeshkian's first major multilateral engagement since taking office, and comes at a time of heightened regional volatility, with Iran facing persistent U.S. airstrikes and maritime pressure in the Strait of Hormuz.
