French journalist’s exhibition highlights 2025 Thai-Cambodian conflict, heritage damage

PHNOM PENH – The photographic works of Le Figaro journalist Jean-Luc Moreau Deleris are currently on display at the Couvent des Minimes in Perpignan, France, from August 29 through September 13.
Part of the Visa pour l’image festival, the exhibition is free and open to the public, and aims to inform the global community by showcasing premier photojournalism. This year’s event features 20 exhibitions, including Deleris’ documentation of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.
“In 2025, Thailand attacked Cambodia and has since annexed several sections of territory along the border. Thai artillery fire caused serious damage to several Angkorian heritage sites, including the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” Delaris explains, in an introduction to his work.
He notes that while border disputes between the two nations are not a new phenomenon, this recent iteration of fighting was particularly fierce, despite the significant military imbalance between the two countries. The journalist describes a “complex crisis” that has resulted in numerous fatalities and the displacement of thousands of families.

Deleris also highlights the profound emotional impact of the conflict on the Cambodian people, noting that families across the country continue to mourn those lost in previous wars. “Fifty years after the start of the Khmer Rouge genocide, the psychological wounds have not yet healed,” he says.
The exhibition follows a detailed nine-page report on the border situation published by Deleris in the French magazine Le Figaro on August 30.
