Malaysia ranks best in world for digital nomads in global index
Arya News - According to the Rumavi Global Relocation Index 2026, Malaysia scored 79.1 out of 100 in the Best Countries for Digital Nomads category – ahead of destinations such as Portugal, Thailand, Georgia and Taiwan.

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has been named the world’s best country for digital nomads, according to the Rumavi Global Relocation Index 2026.
The nation scored 79.1 out of 100 in the Best Countries for Digital Nomads category, ahead of destinations such as Portugal, Thailand, Georgia and Taiwan.
The independent ranking, which assessed 192 countries and territories, evaluates destinations based on connectivity, affordability, lifestyle, street safety and ease of obtaining short-stay visas.
According to the study, affordability is a key factor in the ranking, with more expensive countries being pushed down as location-independent earners tend to select destinations based on cost.
Malaysia also ranked third globally in the overall Rumavi Global Relocation Index, with a score of 72.0 after first-placed Estonia (72.8) and Singapore (72.6).
Malaysia performed particularly well as a destination for retirees, ranking first globally with a score of 75.8.
The study said the country’s strong performance among digital nomads and retirees was driven by its affordability and favourable tax treatment of foreign income.
However, it also highlighted concerns over the rule of law and street safety, particularly for entrepreneurs considering Malaysia for business opportunities.
The index assesses countries and territories across factors considered relevant to foreigners seeking to live, work, retire, or invest overseas.
Rumavi’s website stated that it is an independent advisory platform in South-East Asia for foreign buyers and people looking to relocate.
