Japan’s defence minister Shinjiro Koizumi says acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines not being ruled out

Japan’s defence minister Shinjiro Koizumi says acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines not being ruled out
Arya News - Earlier, a US Navy official, in an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun and other media outlets, has expressed a positive view on Japan acquiring nuclear-powered submarines.

TOKYO – A U.S. Navy official has expressed a positive view of ongoing discussions in Japan about acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, saying the country should consider introducing them.
The official made the remarks during an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun and other media outlets at a U.S. naval facility in Hawaii.
Ahead of a planned year-end revision of three security documents, including the National Security Strategy, some voices within the Japanese government and the ruling coalition have called for acquiring such vessels, highlighting their capacity for extended underwater operations over long distances.
Nevertheless, calls for caution remain strong in the government, given concerns over high costs and difficulties in securing personnel.
The Navy official pointed out that it is technically feasible for Japan to construct such submarines, citing the fact that the country already operates nuclear power plants.
Meanwhile, regarding South Korea’s consideration of introducing nuclear submarines, the official argued that acquiring them merely as a status symbol would be a mistake, emphasizing that Seoul needs a clear and valid rationale.
