TOKYO – Overseas boxers competing in the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 were treated to Nishio’s matcha, as the host city for boxing matches in Aichi Prefecture showcased its local specialty.
The Nishio Tea Cooperative Association and the municipal government organized the event on Thursday to showcase the appeal of matcha, the finely ground green tea powder.
Boxers and team officials were invited to the event, which was held at the hotel where about 200 boxers and others from 12 countries and regions — including Thailand, Bahrain, the Philippines and Kazakhstan — are staying.
The athletes, who visited in between practicing, watched intently as an official of the cooperative whisked matcha with a chasen bamboo whisk. They were pleasantly surprised by its rich aroma and distinct taste.
A female boxer representing Jordan appeared delighted with her first taste of matcha, noting that it went down more smoothly than anticipated and that its sweet fragrance refreshed her.
An Afghan boxer also seemed impressed, commenting that she sensed the spirit of Japanese culture in the tea’s subtle sweetness.
