Lao Art Week 2026 celebrates creativity, cultural heritage across four provinces
Arya News - Held under the theme “Radiant”, the festival runs from October 9-25, featuring 32 art and cultural programmes across Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Champasak and Savannakhet, marking a significant expansion of the annual event.

VIENTIANE – Lao Art Week 2026 has opened in Vientiane, bringing together artists, cultural practitioners and communities to celebrate Lao creativity, preserve cultural heritage and promote the country’s growing creative industries.
Held under the theme “Radiant”, the festival runs from October 9-25, featuring 32 art and cultural programmes across Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Champasak and Savannakhet, marking a significant expansion of the annual event.
The festival officially opened at the Lao National Museum in Vientiane on October 9, attracting artists, cultural organisations, government representatives, development partners and members of the public.
The event features exhibitions, performances, workshops, cultural activities and discussions aimed at connecting artists with audiences, encouraging creative expression and strengthening appreciation of Laos’ rich cultural identity.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director General of the Department of Heritage and Fine Arts under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Dr Viengphone Soukkhavong, highlighted the importance of art in connecting the country’s cultural heritage with contemporary creativity.
“This exhibition is not merely a display of pictures. It also connects and blends the past, the present, and the future,” he said.
He noted that the exhibition at the Lao National Museum features 71 artworks, reflecting the creativity and talent of Lao artists and their ability to combine traditional artistic expression with modern techniques and technology.
Dr Viengphone said the exhibition also supports efforts to develop Laos’ heritage economy by encouraging artists to produce diverse and marketable creative works.
Such initiatives could help transform artistic talent and cultural heritage into economic opportunities while preserving the country’s traditions and identity.
Representing the Embassy of Luxembourg, Mr Frank Peiffer emphasised the power of art to connect people across different cultural and social backgrounds.
“Despite our different backgrounds and beliefs, art reminds us that we share a common capacity to connect, reflect, and feel,” he said.
He described the festival’s theme, “Radiant – The Light Within Us All”, as a reflection of Laos’ ability to embrace new possibilities while remaining deeply rooted in its traditional values and customs.
Luxembourg’s support for this year’s festival includes an experiential learning programme that enables young students to learn traditional handicrafts, including making Mak Beng, decorative banana-leaf offering cones, and candle floats used in Buddhist ceremonies.
These activities are particularly meaningful during the period of Boun Kathin and Boun Ok Phansa (End of Buddhist Lent), when families and communities come together to make merit, honour their ancestors and maintain longstanding religious traditions.
Mr Peiffer highlighted the importance of these customs in strengthening family and community bonds, while ensuring that traditional knowledge is passed on to younger generations.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of The XYZ Art and Culture Centre, Manithip Vongphachanh, said the festival’s expansion reflects growing collaboration among artists, cultural organisations and supporting partners.
“Radiant is not just a theme — it’s what happens when a community decides to carry the light together,” Manithip said.
Established in 2022, Lao Art Week has evolved from a Vientiane-based initiative into a national platform promoting artistic exchange, creative entrepreneurship and opportunities for emerging Lao artists.
This year’s festival is supported by partners including Beerlao Green & Tigerhead Water, Luxembourg Development Cooperation (LuxDev) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Beyond celebrating artistic talent, the festival seeks to strengthen cultural tourism, encourage innovation and promote Lao cultural identity to wider regional and international audiences.
By bringing contemporary art and traditional practices together, Lao Art Week aims to inspire younger generations to value their cultural roots while exploring new forms of creative expression.
Its expansion across four provinces also offers opportunities for more communities to participate in cultural activities, helping build a stronger and more inclusive creative sector in Laos.
