India, Britain to pass Japan 2027 GDP rankings, IMF says
Arya News - Both India and Britain are expected to see higher economic growth than Japan. The continued depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar on foreign exchange markets is also expected to have an impact on Japan’s nominal GDP.

WASHINGTON/BANGKOK – Japan’s nominal gross domestic product will be overtaken by India’s and Britain’s in 2027, thereby slipping to sixth place, according to projections by the International Monetary Fund.
The latest estimates were announced Monday.
In the IMF’s April report, Britain’s GDP was expected to surpass Japan’s in 2029, but now it is likely to rise to fifth place two years earlier.
Japan’s nominal GDP is $4.3419 trillion in 2026 and will be $4.4676 trillion in 2027, according to IMF estimates.
India, with a nominal GDP of $4.0602 trillion, is ranked sixth behind Japan and Britain in 2026. But India’s nominal GDP is projected to reach $4.5211 trillion in 2027, moving up to fourth place following the United States, China and Germany.
Britain’s nominal GDP is projected to surpass Japan’s by rising from $4.2684 trillion in 2026 to $4.4889 trillion in 2027.
Both India and Britain are expected to see higher economic growth than Japan. The continued depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar on foreign exchange markets also is expected to have an impact on Japan’s nominal GDP.
The IMF forecast worldwide economic growth for 2026 at 3.1%, revising its July forecast up 0.1 percentage point. It analyzed that expanding demand related to artificial intelligence is offsetting the negative effects of soaring energy prices. Japan’s economic growth for 2026 was revised up by 0.1 percentage points to 0.7%.
