KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak remains in Kajang Prison as he and his legal team study the conditions attached to his conditional pardon, including the payment of a RM50mil fine before he can be transferred to house arrest.
In a statement issued on his behalf by Messrs Shafee & Co, the firm said Najib’s transfer to house arrest depends on the conditions of the pardon being fulfilled.
“Until the fine is paid to the court, our client remains in Kajang Prison.
“Our client and our legal team are presently studying those terms and their practical implications,” the statement said yesterday.
The firm said a significant part of Najib’s assets, bank accounts and properties remain frozen subject to enforcement proceedings by the government.
“As their disposal is not presently within his sole control, his ability to satisfy the conditions therefore turns in part on matters that do not lie in his own hands,” it said.
The firm said Najib is taking legal advice and considering his options on how best to meet the conditions.
The former prime minister also expressed gratitude to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the party’s supreme council, members and supporters for standing by him.
He also thanked Malaysians who had offered assistance towards meeting the conditions but said he did not want Umno members, supporters or members of the public to feel burdened or obliged to assist him.
He also asked that his family’s privacy be respected.
Meanwhile, Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa said the family respected the decision of the Pardons Board last Friday, which allows her father to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the conditions imposed, including payment of the RM50mil fine.
In an Instagram post yesterday, Nooryana, also known as Yana Najib, said her father had yet to return home.
“Many friends and followers are asking: ‘Has DSN (Najib) come home yet?’
“Everyone who cares about ‘Bossku’ would naturally want to see him return home to be with his family. Not at the moment, not yet,” her post said.
She said Najib had been informed through his lawyers that funds raised for the fine would be paid through official channels.
She added that the family understood the fine would have to be paid to the court, a receipt issued and handed to the Prisons Department before a release order for house arrest could be obtained.
Nooryana said the family visited Najib on Saturday and that he was touched by the response to the fundraising effort.
She said Najib told her that he did not expect so many people were willing to contribute and would “never force it on anyone”.
She thanked Umno for leading efforts to collect funds and stressed that contributions were voluntary.
Separately, the Prisons Department said it has yet to receive official written notification on Najib’s conditional pardon.
It said the Home Ministry and the department are awaiting the official notification and would implement any directive received through the appropriate channels in accordance with the law and prison regulations.
Meanwhile, Najib remains involved in other legal proceedings.
In December 2025, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined RM11.38bil after being convicted on four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.28bil in 1MDB funds.
The case is currently on appeal.
